None of us can deny reading horoscopes. We have all done it at some point in our lives either when waiting at the doctor’s office or every morning before we set out for work. There are varied reasons why people read horoscopes. Most do it for fun while a few are driven by an innocent curiosity to predict the future. Whatever the reasons, we often ask if there is any truth in the interpretation of these zodiac signs.
Horoscopes might appear frivolous and trivial, but in reality they are based on a beautifully-arranged system called the cosmos – the sun, the moon, the planets and the stars. The positions of these celestial bodies give one a deeper insight into their love life, career and personality traits.
The Wheel of the Zodiac
The astrological system can be understood with an illustration of the wheel of the zodiac. The wheel is an eternal circle called the sun. Within this circle is a band containing twelve houses. Each of the twelve houses is roughly 30 degrees and represents a particular sun sign. Thus, there are 12 signs – Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
Also known as the wheel of life, the wheel of the zodiac has no formal beginning or end. Any point can be regarded as the start. However, to simplify the system, Aries has been chosen as the starting point in common agreement. The date of birth is used as a cue to determine your sun sign.
Elements and Ruling Planets
In astrology, every zodiac sign has an identifying symbol. For example, the Ram is the symbol for Aries, the Twins for Gemini and the Bull for Taurus. In addition to this, every sign is governed by an element and ruled by a planet. There are four elements. They are Earth, Water, Fire and Air. There are three fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), three water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces), three air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) and three Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn).
Every house also has a ruling planet: Aries (Mars), Taurus (Venus), Gemini (Mercury), Cancer, Leo, Virgo (Mercury), Libra (Venus), Scorpio (Pluto), Sagittarius (Jupiter), Capricorn (Saturn), Aquarius(Uranus) and Pisces (Neptune). Cancer and Leo do not have a ruling planet. Cancer is controlled by the Moon and Leo by the sun.
The interpretation of the horoscope is tied to the interactions between symbol, the element and the ruling planet. A person’s character traits are determined on the basis of the nature of the element. Fire being a symbol of heat and rage signifies a hot or short-tempered person. The symbol also attributes certain qualities to the person.
The final factor is the ruling planet. The planets have specific qualities. For example Venus has associations with love while Neptune in moody. The three governing celestial bodies – the sun, the moon and the planets travel through the 12 houses. Owing to the differences in temperaments planets interact differently with each house. Horoscopes are generated on the basis of the interactions between planets and sun signs.
